How to Choose a Car Phone Mount
For iPhone road recording, the mount needs to give the camera a clear view and hold the phone securely. Start by considering a suction mount designed for windshields, then check it against your phone, case and vehicle.

Why consider a windshield suction mount?
Compared with a lower mounting position, a windshield mount makes it easier to raise the camera above the dashboard and adjust the phone for landscape recording. Choose a position that clears the camera without blocking the driver's view. A clear camera view does not automatically mean an unobstructed view for the driver.

Five things to check before buying
- Mounting surface: look for explicit windshield compatibility. Dashboard versions, glass versions and mounts with separate bases may differ. “Vacuum suction” alone does not establish suitability for glass.
- Landscape support and camera clearance: the phone should stay secure horizontally, with locked joints and no clamps covering the rear camera. Check the actual recording view after fitting it.
- Phone and case compatibility: check clamp width for a grip mount, or phone, case and ring compatibility for a magnetic mount. Gently pull the fitted phone to check retention.
- Arm and joints: choose a setup that locks securely in the required position without an unnecessarily long extended arm. Review a short test recording for shaking or a drooping angle.
- Power and removal: leave room for the connector and cable. Keep cables from pulling on the phone or crossing steering and pedal areas, and make sure fitting and removal are convenient while parked.
A mount to consider
We suggest considering the iOttie Easy One Touch 6 Dash & Windshield Mount on Amazon (model EOTNCG102). It uses a suction base and clamp arms, so it does not require a magnetic case. The rotating cradle lets you adjust the phone for landscape recording.
Choose the Dash & Windshield version and check the fit with your phone and case, rear-camera clearance and charging cable. The photo above illustrates windshield placement; it does not show this iOttie model. Prices and availability depend on your Amazon region.
Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions: for windshield mounting, attach the suction cup directly to clean glass. The included dashboard pad is for dashboard installation.
Install while parked, then make a short test recording
- Follow the mount's instructions to clean and dry the surface and lock the suction base and joints. Do not assume compatibility with every film or glass surface.
- Check the view from the driver's seat. Keep clear of airbags, vehicle sensors and controls, and check local requirements for windshield placement.
- Open TripREC and frame the road with your intended camera and recording quality. Check the road, vehicles ahead and frame edges for obstructions.
- Connect power and start recording before driving. After a short drive, park and review the file for shaking, reflections and framing. Stop safely before addressing looseness or overheating.
A buying checklist does not replace an installation check. Do not adjust the mount or operate the phone while driving. Check the attachment again before your next trip after the vehicle has been parked for a long time.
